Martino Gamper
Disco Carbonara
Installation, 2019

Brand development and public realm commissioning for King's Cross, 'Disco Carbonara' by Martino Gamper was the first Festival Commission for the King's Cross Design District in partnership with the London Design Festival. This one-off site-specific installation was a playful temporary addition to the King's Cross architecture. The intention for the installation was to set the stage and bring attention to King's Cross stepping up its annual offering by forming a Design District for the first time following the success of the area's Design Route in 2018.

Gamper’s concept was designed as a gateway within Coal Drops Yard and explored the temporary nature of design festivals. Taking inspiration from King’s Cross nightlife heritage and the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, Gamper used wood offcuts and scaffolding to create a temporary fake disco facade, complete with music, lights and bouncers. The structure had a low environmental impact, the rented scaffolding was returned and the beautiful Alpi shingles were repurposed into the Gamper's subsequent projects.
