Design, Interrupted
Exhibition, 2022

Exhibition curation as part of Maggie Mustaklem's doctoral research on Al and the design process at the Oxford Internet Institute, Design, Interrupted' examines the shift in creative work from analogue to algorithmic image search.

The project focuses on how algorithms might be "interrupting" the process of searching for images. Searching for inspiration is often a critical early stage of the design process. Historically, leafing through books and magazines provided this; however, now search is primarily digital and uses social media platforms, where images are optimized and aggregated. Many people raise questions about the fairness and diversity of online image searches. This research considers the unintended consequences and effects these platforms may be having on the design process, and in turn, on creativity at large.

For this project, we secured a space in King's Cross during a key moment in the tech and architecture calendar. Recruiting Parasite 2.0 to lead on exhibition design, alongside graphic designer Elena Jarmosh, the team delivered an interactive gallery installation and workshop, creating an engaging experience in which designers and architects (re)considered the ideation process through fresh eyes. This project aimed to foster a dialogue with creative professionals and provide further content for Mustaklem's research.
