Space Frames
Installation, 2018 - 2021

Public realm curation and commissioning for King's Cross; 'Space Frames' by Netherlands-based industrial designers, Studio Mieke Meijer, is an outdoor modular lighting and seating system that can be reused and reconfigured.

The design responds to the beauty of the functional industrial architecture that surrounds the works. They trace and mimic the graphic outlines of Coal Drops Yard's Victorian arches. Constructed with sustainability in mind, the interior of the Space Frames is a light but strong aluminium skeleton that can be easily taken apart and recycled. Remarkably, all of the Space Frames are handmade by Studio Mieke Meijer in their workshop.

The structures were commissioned for the launch of Coal Drops Yard, with long-term use in mind, as a set of assets that can be creatively re-thought and reinstalled year-on-year to brighten up the dark winter nights across the 67-acre estate.

The Space Frames were commissioned from MDR Gallery, a Lower Stable Street tenant at the time.
