Outdoor Canvas
Installation, 2024
Curation and commissioning for Begbroke Innovation District. The 'Outdoor Canvas' project is by STORE and architectural designer Kaye Song, in partnership with engineers Structure Workshop.
The canvases, modular and multifunctional, house an annual rotating art commission and, with the addition of a few hay bales, can be configured into a theatre for music performances or cinema screenings, creating a defined space for cultural activities within the surrounding landscape. The design itself takes cues from farming vernacular - lean, efficient and highly functional. The structures are roadworthy and can be relocated and reused, which provides an incredibly agile opportunity for art to appear across a developing site.
Alongside the making of these structures, STORE ran a series of design and engineering workshops with local community organisations and schools. Students from Chilworth House Upper School took part in an accessories design workshop, creating inventive ways to serve refreshments in a cinema setup. Their designs were then transposed to the hay bail accessories that make up the kit of seating parts with space for snacks.
The 'Outdoor Canvas' project is the first work to be completed as part of 'Another Landscape’ our new public arts programme for Oxford University Development in Begbroke. The programme directly responds to, and is in dialogue with, the surrounding landscape and those that inhabit it - prioritising local materials, innovation, knowledge exchange, co-design, experimentation, local stewardship and space for research.
