KX Seating
Installation, 2021
Public realm curation and commissioning for King’s Cross, ‘KX Seating’ by London-based practitioners Giles Round and Andrés Ros Soto, collectively known as CASA ESTUDIO, is a prototype for a modular seating system made from Richlite, an FSC-certified recycled paper composite.
Trialled in two different sizes, the benches are a deceptively simple slatted construction made using 'off-the-shelf' sheet material. Made specifically for King's Cross, the construction method references the site's industrial history while its curved edges and exaggerated joins are reminiscent of children's construction toys. Modular and according to a formula, it has the potential to roll out on a larger scale and to include tables, chairs, recliners and more.
Despite being made from paper, Richlite is weather-resistant and durable enough for a busy public realm. These prototypes were presented as part of the estate's London Design Festival offering, installed in high-traffic areas and making use of temporary enlivenment budgets to test the viability of future larger scale public realm seating projects for Related Argent.
The project was co-curated with Rebecca Heald.
